What is Elimination Communication?

Lots of people have been asking me about this lately. The short answer is it’s a method of answering your baby’s cues and taking them potty instead of diapering. I’m by no means an expert and we only did it part time and late start with both boys. I am planning on starting from birth with this one however. With DS1 we started at about 13 months, and honestly I didn’t know what I was doing had a name, I just knew he had a bad diaper rash, I had to wait for the nice cloth diapers I ordered in the mail to get there, and if I sat him on the potty periodically he’d often go in it and not have to make his rash worse. So with DS2 I learned this had a name and a system but still thought it was a little crazy. Still, he had really clear cues and around 6-7 months I started signing with him and taking him potty. This worked GREAT until he hit about 11 months and started cruising and no longer wanted to sit still to potty. I hadn’t really learned enough about potty pauses to deal with it so we just kinda got back to it later. Much like breastfeeding however, any is better than none, as even occasional and part time EC still maintains your child’s awareness of their natural processes, and will ease the process when it’s time to go diaper free forever. Anyhow that is my story in a nutshell. Here are some more resources for your diaper free edumacation.

Happy reading (and pottying!)
