I’ve gotten a few searches for doula bag supplies lately, I thought I would share a list of what I keep in my bag that actually gets used:

Fetoscope

Various homeopathics for slow labor

Aromatherapy oils (I use peppermint, lavender, and clary sage the most)

Pocket reflexology chart

3×5 cards with aromatherapy mixes, homeopathy, mudras for labor, labor positions, affirmations, etc

honey sticks and high protein snack bars

emergen ‘c drink packets

bottled water

toothbrush, toothpaste, maxi pads, lip balm, q tips

various stones purported to have healing properties for birth (unakite and amber are good ones to have)

emergency childbirth kit (never know when you’ll have a mom go fast!)

newborn scale (good for post partum visits if mom is worried about baby’s weight gain)

peppermint foot lotion, and various massage and carrier oils

birth ball

soon to pack a whisper wear breast pump

herbal tinctures

notebook and pen

business cards

prolonged labor hand book

2 small plastic combs

rice pack

samples for mom (burts bees lotion, soap, mother’s milk tea, rrl tea, compleat mother magazine back issues)

book or knitting for if mom is sleeping

rescue remedy

I get a lot of hits for this subject. The bad news is health care wise, it’s a struggle. The good news is there are lots of people to support you and help you find information until you find the right provider (or choose not to have one) that you are happy with.

Hosted of course by a local hospital was mainly a “let’s advertise our hospital” celebration. Still our little doula table did get some lovely women coming by to find out more about us, and many had already hired one of us which was great. I do think the TWO formula companies passing out samples galore was a bit much, as were the two presentations on anesthesia available to you. I’m definitely hoping next year we’ll be allowed to present as well and help even out the information available to women in our area. Some exciting tables present- a lady offering birthing from within classes, which I’ve been dying to see offered locally, and another lady offering organic baby food and hand made cards. Very nice. As always La Leche League was also present; it was great to see them again!

Doula??? Really? While part of me has some hopes, having seen his other movies (some of which I’ve even gone so far as to enjoy), I have a feeling most hopes will be dashed. Maybe it’ll be a touching story with a nice moral outcome with comedic interludes interspersed sort of like what Adam Sandler’s been putting out lately where he’ll start out an obnoxious asshole but learn some important lesson and become a nice guy at the end. We can only hope.
